Bryan Fuller Featured on Idaho Newspaper

2098560.jpgThe creator of Pushing Daisies grew up in Clarkston, Washington in the 1970s and ’80s.

And thanks to his show’s success, Bryan Fuller was recently featured in the Lewiston Tribune. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Fuller marinated his young brain on a diet of Stephen King, “Star Trek” and “The Twilight Zone.” TV was a passage to another world but he never imagined he would one day be on the other side of the screen, orchestrating his own fantasies from his own office at Warner Bros. studios.

The 38-year-old is the writer and producer of one of the seasons most critically acclaimed new series, the supernatural fairy tale “Pushing Daisies,” which airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays on ABC.

“Every day is kind of crazy,” says Fuller about life as an L.A. writer and producer. “Once the scripts are written it’s a matter of producing them. There’s a lot of meticulous detail that goes into this show. … It’s sort of alchemy to get the tone.”

Fuller, who was also a writer and producer for “Wonderfalls” and “Heroes,” describes his newest show as a hybrid fantasy, murder mystery and love story. Every detail of the show goes through him, from the props and sets to visual effects and music. That’s one of the rewarding things about writing for TV, he says, as opposed to film, where the writers job ends with the words.

“It’s very intensive. I’m often working anywhere from 15 to 20 hour days, and that includes the weekends.”

Guest Star News: Paul Reubens Out, Raul Esparza In

esparza.jpg We’re sad to report that the role originally slated for Paul Reubens on Pushing Daisies has been recast.

According to ThePieMaker.com, Alfredo Aldarisio - your basic traveling homeopathic antidepressant representative/salesman - will now be portrayed by Broadway veteran Raul Esparza (pictured).

This actor has also appeared in the movie Find Me Guilty and and an episode of Spin City.

Fortunately, Reubens will be be guest starring on the show. He’ll be playing a new (and equally quirky) character named Oscar Vibenius, a former olfactory expert who smells something a little different about Chuck.

In the meantime, Molly Shannon and Jayma Mays will still be coming aboard. Talk about their appearances and more in our Pushing Daisies forum.

Spoiler Alert: Jayma Mays on Pushing Daisies

As previously reported, Jayma Mays - formerly Hiro’s love interest on Heroes - will be guest-starring on the fourth episode of Pushing Daisies, “Pigeons.”

Here’s a brief rundown of the episode, along with a picture of Mays from it:

A plane crash into an apartment building leaves the trio with a case: did the pilot commit suicide? Meanwhile, Chuck (Anna Friel) finds herself drawn to the man who appears to be the sole survivor (guest star Dash Mihok), much to Ned’s distress. Also, Olive takes a wounded messenger pigeon to Vivian and Lily for help.

Swoosie Kurtz Speaks on Character, Personal Life

Swoosie Kurtz is a veteran actress known for portraying quirky characters. So, how does the person herself stack up against these eccentric individuals?

“I get life fright, I don’t get stage fright,” Kurtz recently said to The Record in Canada. “I can get up in front of 2,000 people without a nerve in my body and feel just great, but, when I set out to drive to Santa Monica, I start shaking in the car.”

Of all the roles this actress has slipped into, though Kurtz says Aunt Lily on Pushing Daisies is the most far out there.

“Lily is the most eccentric character I’ve ever played,” said said. “When I read the script, I went bananas.”

The multiphobic, one-eyed Lily is bitter and shutdown, but Kurtz insists that there’s more to her than that.

“Lily is very isolated but very passionate, lusty and sexual,” she added, “but she has no way to release that in the life she’s living. She’s definitely a little dark, because she’s harboring a lot of unresolved mental baggage. But I know a couple of big secrets about her that will be revealed later.”

Meanwhile, here’s an odd twist of fate: Swoosie’s father - Air Force pilot Col. Frank Kurtz - was also formerly a diving champion who won a bronze medal at the 1932 Olympics… and underwent a botched surgery that cost him the sight in one eye and left him with an eye patch.

“That’s why I see Lily as not so comedic,” Kurtz said. “I know what my dad went through. It was so tragic . . .”

Pushing Daisies to Go the Way of Big Love?

Are you familiar with the show Big Love on HBO? It’s based around a polygamist Mormon and his wives.

Why do we bring this up? Because a recent feature on E! Online hinted that Pushing Daisies may be following the theme of this controversial, hit show. Sort of.

Emerson, Ned

Here’s a a Pushing Daisies spoiler from the article:

We hear episode five is a crossover episode with Big Love. Okay, not exactly, but it is about polygamy… The husband gets murdered, and the Daisies gang has to figure out which of his four wives dun it. Hilarious, no?

Hilarious, YES! We can’t wait to watch.
